Frequently Asked Questions - AbsorbentsWhat's this litter made of?Our Litters are comprised of a siliceous volcanic rock which naturally occurs in regions in northern California. The distinguishing feature, which sets it apart from other volcanic minerals is it's ability to expand four to twenty times it's original volume when heated to certain temperatures, creating an ultra-lightweight property. When heated above 1600°F, crushed siliceous rock expands in a manner similar to pop corn. This thermal expansion is due to the presence of water within the crude granule. The combined water vaporizes during the heating process and creates countless tiny vacuum cavities in the heat softened particles. These pockets have the ability to collect liquids and trap them without leaching out, making the granule super absorbent. Moreover, the granules are completely sterile due to the exposure to the extreme temperatures, creating a safe friendly soft granule for your cats paws. Can it be flushed? Although you can flush this litter, we recommend against doing so, as cat fecal matter produces a parasite that cannot be filtered out through conventional sewage treatment processes and when expelled into the ocean waters through rivers and canals, it poses a fatal threat to sea otters. It is also now illegal to flush litter in the state of California for this very reason. What is the best way to dispose of this litter? We recommend placing the used litter in a trash receptacle for transportation to the landfill. Much like horticultural perlite, this litter when introduced to soil promotes drainage and aeration even in heavy clay soils. It also provides optimum moisture retention for successful plant growth. Some of the advantages to landfills include:
